Background of the Study
Noise pollution is an often-overlooked environmental hazard with serious implications for public health, particularly mental well-being. In Nasarawa State, rapid urbanization, increased vehicular traffic, industrial activities, and poor urban planning have contributed to excessive noise levels in both residential and commercial areas (Ahmed & Bala, 2024). The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified prolonged exposure to high noise levels as a significant risk factor for stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and other mental health disorders (WHO, 2023).
Residents in urban centers of Nasarawa State frequently report disruptions due to noise from transportation systems, construction sites, religious gatherings, and commercial activities. High noise levels interfere with concentration, productivity, and relaxation, leading to heightened stress and anxiety (Usman & Garba, 2023). Furthermore, exposure to chronic noise pollution has been associated with an increased risk of depression and cognitive decline, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly (Bello & Musa, 2024).
Despite growing concerns about environmental noise, regulatory frameworks for controlling noise pollution remain weak or poorly enforced in Nasarawa State. Many urban dwellers lack awareness of the potential risks associated with noise exposure, and mitigation efforts are largely inadequate. This study seeks to investigate the extent of noise pollution in Nasarawa State and its effects on mental health, providing evidence-based recommendations for policy improvement and urban planning.
Statement of the Problem
Noise pollution is a significant yet often underestimated public health concern in Nasarawa State. Studies have shown that continuous exposure to excessive noise levels can lead to serious mental health conditions such as stress, anxiety, depression, and sleep disturbances (Ali & Ibrahim, 2024). However, in many urban areas within the state, noise control policies are either non-existent or poorly enforced, leading to uncontrolled environmental noise.
The effects of noise pollution on mental health remain largely under-researched in Nigeria, particularly in Nasarawa State. There is a need for empirical studies to assess the extent of noise pollution, its sources, and its impact on residents' psychological well-being. Without adequate intervention, the increasing urbanization and industrialization in the state will likely exacerbate the mental health challenges linked to environmental noise.

Research Hypotheses
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on assessing noise pollution in selected urban areas of Nasarawa State, with an emphasis on its impact on mental health. Data will be collected from noise level measurements, mental health surveys, and interviews with affected residents.
Limitations include the difficulty in isolating noise pollution as the sole factor affecting mental health, potential biases in self-reported data, and constraints in monitoring long-term mental health effects. Additionally, variations in individuals' sensitivity to noise may influence the results.
